Carolinian Canada Forest Garden Guild

Promoting Forest Gardening Education, Networking & Support

The Carolinian Canada Forest Garden Guild encourages and promotes Forest Gardening, a system of conscious, sustainable, ecological design for growing food, fuel, fibre, fertilizer, fodder and ‘farmaceuticals’ as well as fun in Carolinian Canada. We are a group of people already trained in, or experienced with, Forest Gardens and/or Permaculture.

Six times a year, we gather to exchange ideas, network and support each other’s projects and endeavours. At these convergences, engaging speakers bring their own expertise and experience to informative skill-buildingsessions in topics ranging from tree grafting, pruning techniques, propagation practices, seed collecting, wild food and medicinal plant foraging to mushroom propagation, and everything in between!

Public outreach through classes, workshops, and other activities are an important part of our vision. In addition to forest gardening techniques, we explore topics such as building soil fertility, creating microclimates, water catchment systems, ponds and greywater systems, and other aspects of agroforestry or Permaculture. We also provide networking information about other local groups that you can contact for more information about these topics.

We form partnerships with other organizations to promote sustainability education and implementation in our region, and welcome inquiries from any group with similar goals.

In case someone is not formally trained but has apprenticed, and is very serious, passionate and actively involved with forest gardening, please contact us.

Our Vision

Our vision is of a future in which many of our local needs are met through carefully designed and maintained forest gardens. We work toward this through our connections with ourselves, each other, the earth, other organizations, our families, our local communities, and our global community.

We promote forest gardening through networking, supporting, being inspired and inspiring others by our Carolinian bioregion.

Our Mission

Networking and Supporting

  • Grow relationships between forest gardeners, organic and ecological farmers, herbalists, nutritionists, foragers and others in related areas
  • Network to share resources, ideas, inspiration, and passion
  • Create business and trade opportunities
  • Participate in larger forest gardening and permaculture networks

Public Outreach

  • Raise awareness about, and promote forest gardening
  • Collaborate with farmers, businesses, conservation groups, and government to formally recognize forest gardening as a legitimate form of sustainable and regenerative production
  • Provide opportunities for forest garden and permaculture education including tours and demonstration sites

Research

  • Act as an umbrella for small groups and individuals doing research on forest gardening and permaculture topics
  • Provide a nurturing space to share experiments, and research results
  • Keep abreast of what is happening in other bioregions around the world

Note: Individuals who do not have formal training in, but are serious about forest gardening are welcome to be involved. However, it must be understood that introductory training is not the role of the Guild. Individuals will need to familiarize themselves with these concepts through training, books, affiliations, community participation, etc.
